Rounding out my sophomore year I was given the chance in class to make a look for myself and this was exciting because up until this point, we had only made women’s wear in class. For this look, I wanted to make a pair of pants that would be durable so I used a heavy 14 oz black denim. For the shirt I was inspired by vintage rugby jersey and the patchwork stripes that Canterbury of New Zealand used in the 80s/ and 90s.
My favorite design detail on the pants was the huge back pocket that I modeled after Patagonia Stand-Up Hiking shorts. When drafting this design I had to go through a lot of trial and error to make the pocket big but not too big. This size ended up being perfect to where I could sit down without sitting on my phone and not too deep to where my things were hard to take out of my pocket.
For the polo I wanted to stay true to my idea of random striped so I got 4 polos form the thrift store and cut the panels using patterns that I made. I really like the blending of different knit textures and the feel it had when i wore it.
This project was by far my favorite and provided me with great experience in patternmaking. I love both items that I made and with a couple tweaks on my slopers, I’ll be able to make lots of things for myself.
